Healing Your Tattoo with Intention

Tattoo Aftercare

Your tattoo is more than artwork—it’s an open wound that requires proper care to heal cleanly, preserve detail, and prevent complications. The first 7 days are the most critical. Follow these guidelines closely to protect your investment and support optimal healing.

Your First 7 Days: The Foundation of HealinG

We apply a medical-grade transparent bandage immediately after your session. This barrier is designed to protect your tattoo during its most vulnerable stage.

What to expect:

  • Waterproof, breathable, and hypoallergenic

  • Protects against bacteria, debris, and friction

  • Helps prevent ink and fluid from staining clothing or linens

  • May collect ink, blood, or plasma—this is completely normal

Keep your bandage on for up to 7 days unless otherwise instructed.

Daily Care (While Bandage Is On)

Even with the protective barrier, hygiene is essential.

  • Wash your tattoo twice daily using clean hands

  • Clean gently over the bandage

  • Keep the area dry and avoid unnecessary friction

  • If the bandage begins to peel:

    • Trim excess carefully with sterilized scissors (clean with rubbing alcohol), or

    • Stop by the shop for a replacement

Clean Environment Matters

Your tattoo is highly susceptible to contamination during healing.

Be mindful that everything contacting your tattoo is clean:

  • Clothing

  • Bed sheets and linens

  • Towels

  • Your hands (always wash before touching)

What to Avoid During Healing

To ensure proper healing and avoid complications, avoid the following:

  • Sun Exposure: No prolonged sun exposure on a fresh tattoo

  • Water Immersion:

    • No baths, pools, hot tubs, rivers, lakes, or ocean

    • You may resume after 2–3 weeks

  • Touching:

    • Do not allow others or animals to touch your tattoo

  • Picking or Scratching:

    • Let your skin heal naturally to avoid scarring or ink loss

Watch for Healing Concerns

Some discomfort is normal—but certain symptoms are not.

Contact us immediately if you notice:

  • Excessive redness or swelling

  • Increasing pain after the first few days

  • Unpleasant odor

  • Any unusual or worsening symptoms

We’d always rather hear from you early than too late.

Removing Your Bandage

When it’s time to remove your bandage, do so carefully:

Best method:

  1. Remove in the shower after washing the rest of your body

  2. Let warm water run over the bandage

  3. Gently peel from top to bottom, keeping the film close to the skin

  4. Expect fluid buildup inside the bandage—this is normal

After Bandage Removal: Your New Routine

Once the bandage is removed, your daily care becomes hands-on.

Step-by-step:

  1. Wash your tattoo with a mild antibacterial liquid soap

  2. Use your hands only—no washcloths or abrasives

  3. Rinse thoroughly

  4. Pat dry with a clean paper towel (do not rub)

  5. Allow to air dry for about 1 hour

  6. Apply a very light layer of fragrance-free lotion

Ongoing Care (After Day 7)

Continue this routine daily:

  • Wash → rinse → pat dry

  • Apply lotion once dry

  • Repeat morning and night

Consistency here directly impacts:

  • Color retention

  • Line clarity

  • Overall healing quality
